Giving Your Baby a Bath, Make Sure Your Doing It Right

November 14, 2010 · No Comments · Uncategorized

Bathing your baby is so much fun and when you think of it you imagine a happy baby laughing at the water. Then why are you so stressed? Well, this is only normal. The important thing is to make the bath safe and everything else will come with time.

Think of all the things you might need. A soft piece of cloth, the extra mild organic soap you just bought for this situation, towels and everything else. Then bring all these to the bathroom. Keeping everything close to you will make the bath safer. You should never leave the baby alone in the bath, not even for one second. If you forget something, ask someone to bring it to you or don’t use it at all. Unplug the phone so that it doesn’t ring when you are having the bath. Before you start, you should check the water temperature. Babies don’t like hot water as their skin is very delicate and you can burn it without realizing. Have a medium temperature for the water.

Newborns are not ready for a bath. You should use a sponge to clean the baby. Other than that, the procedure is the same. Test the water temperature and make sure it is not too hot nor too cold. Put the newborn in a safe place and clean it with the sponge. Newborns shouldn’t be bathed every day. You can clean the baby anytime needed, but you should avoid everyday bathing. Wait until it is a few months old before you give the baby a bath.

Bathing the baby has a few things you should pay attention to. Make sure that everything you use is clean. Clean the sink or the baby tub after each bath as still water is a friendly environment for germs. Make sure that the area or the room you use is not cold and is away from drafts. Babies can easily catch a cold that can have severe affects. Always support the baby’s head when in the tub and never leave the baby alone not for one second. You should wash the baby’s hair once a week if there is a need. Don’t overdo it with washing as it is dangerous and really not needed.

You should not use bubble baths as they can irritate the skin and cause rashes. You can use plain water or a mild soap. For newborns plain water is enough as you only have to clean the area behind the ear and parts of the body. Babies are not dirty, they need the bath for other reasons. If you see that the baby is not really at the mood for a bath, you should schedule it for another evening. Have fun.
